Single Seater Airplane Powered by AA Batteries Takes Off

The world's first single seater air plane powered by conventional dry-cell batteries soared five meters (16 feet) above the ground in a demonstration flight in Japan.

The weight of the pilot (57 kg) was as roughly the same as the weight of the entire airplane.

The plane was fitted with 160 AA "Oxyride" batteries. The Oxyride battery is a long-lasting battery said to be 1.5 times as powerful as a regular alkaline battery.
